The K-1 fiancé visa allows a U.S. citizen to bring their foreign fiancé(e) to the United States for the purpose of getting married. Once your fiancé(e) enters the U.S. on a K-1 visa, you have **90 days to get married**—or they must return to their home country.

K-1 Visa Eligibility Requirements
U.S. Citizen Petitioner
The petitioner (you) must be a U.S. citizen. Lawful permanent residents (green card holders) cannot petition for a K-1 visa.
Intent to Marry
Both you and your fiancé(e) must intend to marry each other within 90 days of their arrival in the United States.
Met in Person
You must have met your fiancé(e) in person at least once within the past 2 years (waivers available in rare cases for extreme hardship or cultural/religious reasons).
Legally Free to Marry
Both you and your fiancé(e) must be legally free to marry (any previous marriages must be legally terminated through divorce, annulment, or death).
K-1 Fiancé Visa Process Timeline
The K-1 visa process typically takes 12-18 months from petition filing to visa approval. Here's what to expect:
File Form I-129F Petition
The U.S. citizen petitioner files Form I-129F (Petition for Alien Fiancé) with USCIS. This establishes the relationship and intent to marry.
Timeline: USCIS processing takes 6-12 months
USCIS Approval & NVC Processing
Once USCIS approves the I-129F, the case is sent to the National Visa Center (NVC), which forwards it to the U.S. embassy or consulate in your fiancé(e)'s country.
Timeline: 2-4 weeks
Complete DS-160 & Pay Fees
Your fiancé(e) completes the DS-160 online visa application and pays the visa application fee ($265 as of 2026).
Timeline: 1-2 weeks
Medical Exam & Police Certificates
Your fiancé(e) must undergo a medical examination by an approved physician and obtain police certificates from all countries where they've lived for 6+ months since age 16.
Timeline: 2-4 weeks
Visa Interview at U.S. Embassy
Your fiancé(e) attends an in-person interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate. They must bring all required documents and evidence of your genuine relationship.
Timeline: Interview scheduled 4-8 weeks after documents submitted
Visa Approval & Travel to U.S.
If approved, your fiancé(e) receives their K-1 visa and can travel to the United States. The visa is valid for 6 months from the date of issuance.
Timeline: Visa issued 1-2 weeks after interview
Get Married Within 90 Days
You MUST get married within 90 days of your fiancé(e)'s arrival in the United States. After marriage, file for adjustment of status (green card).
